General Questions
Q: What should you expect at your first massage?
A: Every client fills out a confidential medical history form and we review your past injuries, surgeries and accidents. We encourage an open dialogue so that we can tailor our treatment to suit your individual needs. We can help educate you on your areas of concern, and provide you with an overview of care and self management techniques that you can adopt at home.
Q: How should you dress?
A: Wear comfortable clothing. We use very light water soluble oils that nourish the skin and are readily absorbed. You undress to your level of comfort before being draped into large fluffy towels. You are always draped and covered to provide a high level of privacy.
Q: How long do treatments last?
A: Depending on the session length required your treatment will be for 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes.
Q: Will massage therapy hurt?
A: We apply a therapeutic level of pressure that is different for everyone but determined by you. At this level your body accepts and does not resist the treatment as it would if the pressure was too much. This allows us to work to resolve your symptoms and the cause of your complaint. With deeper work sometimes your muscles may feel tender the next day but this should resolve quickly. We recommend you drink lots of water to facilitate the flushing of metabolic waste that may be released from your muscles during your treatment.
Q: How do you know if massage therapy is right for you?
A: We specialize in the treatment of soft-tissue; that is muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia, and their relationship to bony structures. If you have pain patterns in any of these structures or if your pain is caused by any of these, then massage therapy is often very helpful.
Q: Why do you fill out intake paperwork before your first session?
A: Intake paperwork provides an overview of your medical history and an understanding of your current situation. This helps inform our decision making process and determining the best treatment strategy for you. It is an important process regardless of the type of treatment you are seeking. To save time in your first appointment, you can download these forms from our website or we can email them to you prior to your appointment. Please bring your completed form to your appointment.
Q: Why do we keep treatment notes for all sessions?
A: It’s very important for us to keep a confidential record of your treatments. We use these records to track your progress and modify treatment strategies if needed. As part of your healthcare team it may be requested of us to provide an accurate description of your treatments, strategy and progress to your doctor or other healthcare providers – with your permission of course.
Q: Are there times when you shouldn’t have a massage?
A: There are certain illness’s where massage is not recommended. We can discuss this with you before booking your appointment.
Q: Could I have side effects after a massage treatment?
A: Most times you will not have any 'negative' sides effects. However, it is possible that massage can stimulate deeper healing by releasing toxins stored in muscles and soft tissue to be cleared by your lymphatic system. As with any detoxification you may experience a headache, nausea or flu-like symptoms in the few days after your treatment, especially if your lymphatic system is sluggish.
Whether you experience side effects can also depend on your 'toxin load' which is influenced by your diet, lifestyle and exposure to external pollutants. You can speed up your detoxification and minimize any side effects by drinking lots of water, avoiding alcohol and caffeine and by drinking detox tea for the next few days. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is also a good option to support your elimination and immune systems. With regular massage, side effects disappear.
Q: What are the main modalities that we use?
A: We use a range of soft tissue techniques. These include remedial, deep tissue, trigger point, myofascial release, strain-counterstrain or positional release, proprioneuromuscular facilitation (PNF), postural analysis and correction and relaxation techniques. We also provide Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), Reiki and Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT).
