Reiki
My Reiki Background
In 2002 I became a Usui Reiki practitioner as part of my preparation for the birth of our first child. I researched natural pain management combining Reiki, the Alexander Technique and a knowledge of birthing anatomy and physiology to have two short natural births without the need for pain medication. In learning what my body needed and listening to its cues, I was able to support myself and facilitate the birthing of my children as one of the most positive, wonderful and empowering experiences of my life. The Community Midwife Program and the staff at North East Health were a great support and were back up if I needed them. I regularly practice Reiki for friends and family and now offer it as part of my practice. I would love to help other expectant mother share my experience rather than the sometimes painful and disempowering stories often shared.

Q: What is Reiki?
A: Reiki is a Japanese word that translates to “universal life force energy”. Reiki energy is the energy of life, applied to healing. The Reiki therapist draws upon this energy or universal Qi and transfers it to the client's energy system where it is used by their body's innate intelligence for restoring balance and healing. For those clients who are health, it allows them to access and experience their higher senses and levels of awareness.
Q: How can Reiki help me?
A: Reiki energy heals whatever needs healing and always benefits those who receive it. It cannot be promised that a Reiki treatment will cure a particular disease or gain a specific result. The energy goes to where it’s needed which may be different to what we believe we need.
The main benefits of Reiki are relieving stress and pain and stimulating the body’s healing processes. Reiki cannot replace medicine, but in some cases it can do things that medicine can’t in a way that is more holistic, nurturing and positive to the whole body.
Q: Is Reiki safe?
A: Reiki is totally safe. It will not interfere with medications or other medical treatments. It can often make them more effective and the individual more comfortable. It helps those who are ill, in pain or emotionally distressed. In a healthy person it relaxes and rejuvenates.
Reiki is safe and suitable for everyone, babies, children, the young and old, even animals and plants. It will not cause harm no matter the prevailing condition or status of the individual.
Q: What should I expect from a Reiki Treatment?
A: Before a treatment: Drink water. Good hydration increases the benefits of Reiki and the movement of subtle energies throughout the body.
During a Reiki Treatment
You may feel different sensations or you may feel nothing, either way the healing is happening whether it’s perceived or not.
After a Reiki Treatment
Drink lots of water & eat lightly. The Reiki will have created beneficial changes in your energy & physical body, and depending on your state of health, may have dislodged stagnate energy and/or toxins to be cleansed. These toxins will be cleared via your lymph system and drinking plenty of water will support the process and help your body eliminate the toxins faster. This release should be supported and not stopped. The difference between a cleansing and a disease process is that during a cleansing the person still feels well despite the symptoms.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Loose comfortable clothing is best. Reiki is given fully clothed.
Q: How long does a session last?
A: A Reiki treatment can be tailored to suit the client and the time available. Typical full body treatments last for 60 to 90 minutes depending on the clients needs and the nature of their complaint.
Q: How often might I need a Reiki Treatment?
A: For conditions such as colds or flu, headaches, or sprained ankles, one Reiki treatment may be enough to help. The more run down or depleted a clients health is, the more energy is needed to restore balance. For more serious or chronic conditions more sessions may be required.
Q: Is Reiki religious? What if I don’t believe in it?
A: Reiki is not affiliated with any religious philosophy or belief systems. Reiki describes the energy that animates all of life, the life source. Reiki occurs with or without belief.
